Are images already viewed cached? I ask because clicking on an already viewed image still brings up the loading indicator with a good 2 second or so delay. Seems to me that if I already viewed an image, it should load almost instantly.

The delay comes from the image fading in and out. The loading image is actually the background image of the image div container. If you'd like to speed up the fading, you can do that by opening up the config.php file and you can modify:
$fadespeed="300"; //How fast you want the photos to fade in and out
This can help with the timing of showing the loading image.
